Parole refers to conditional early release from custodial care (prison). An offender is normally permitted to apply for parole after half of the court determined prison sentence has been served. Parole is however not automatic. Parole is granted by the Probation and Parole Board (Kriminalvårdsnämnden).
The period of parole is normally determined to one year after the date of release from prison. During this period the parolee is to have regular contact with her parole officer and the parole officer is to be kept informed about the parolees place of residence, daytime occuppation and means of financial support. Misconduct during the parole period can result in the parolee being required to serve part or all of her remaining sentence in prison. After the period of probation has expired the remainder of the parolees prison sentence is remitted (deemed as served).
