850 service light reset procedure, and alarm reset:

  • The following procedure has been used successfully by many owners.

  • Switch ignition on. Open the diagnostic socket under the bonnet. Select position 7. Press the button 4 times. This puts it in check function. When the LED shows a steady light it is ready to accept the code, which is 151. To enter the code press the button once and wait for the LED to show a steady glow. Press the button 5 times and then wait again. Then press it once. Wait for the LED to flash rapidly for a brief moment, then the service light should be out.

  • Here is some further information from a UK Volvo dealer:
  • This only applies to the early 850 with the diagnostics plug in under the bonnet. On the later one it has been moved inside the car and it is not possible to do the manual resetting of the light in this way, you do have to plug in the "computer for this".
  • Ever been in an 850 and the alarm remote has packed up leaving you stranded !! Unlock the car using the key (alarm will go off but grin and bear it) wait for the alarm to reset, undo the bonnet and locate the fuse box on the o/s bulkhead. Pull out fuse number six (6) then drive away !!!
