Olympique Lyon broke the French transfer record when it signed Anderson for 116 million francs ($20 million) from Barcelona.
Says Anderson: "I know Lyon are ambitious and I'm here to win titles. It's a high (transfer) fee but that gives me more confidence." Has spent most of the European part his career in France, having played for Olympique Marseille between 1993 and 1994 before spending three seasons at Monaco.
Was the French first-division's top scorer with 21 goals in the 1995-6 season and he scored 19 during the championship campaign the following season. Helped Monaco to win the French league crown in 1997 before joining Barcelona for a fee of 4.3 billion pesetas ($28.3 million). Inherited Ronaldo's number nine shirt at Barca. Anderson had hoped that his move to Louis van Gaal's Barcelona would help him to win a place in Brazil's 1998 World Cup squad. But, having failed to make Mario Zagalo's 22-man squad for the finals in France, he spent most of last season on the bench as understudy to Dutch World Cup striker Patrick Kluivert.
