Joined French club Brest after playing for Brazil in the 1986 World Cup and later played for Montpellier and Juventus before joining Borussia Dortmund in 1994.

An athletic player with a reassuring presence in central defence, the experienced Brazilian played in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund from 1994 to 1998 and helped them win the European Cup in 1997, leaving Dortmund at the end of the '97-98 season to return to Brazil, joining Botafogo. Struggled with Botafogo and returned to Borussia in November '98 but fell out with Borussia coach, Michael Skibbe, moving on to Panathinaikos. Joined Werder Bremen from Panathinaikos on one-year contract for an undisclosed transfer fee.
