Known as Ronaldinho or Gaucho. Earned comaprisons with the legendary Pele for scoring a superb solo goal against Venezuela in the 1999 Copa America that was reminiscent of Pele's stunning effort in the 1958 World Cup final.. Brazil coach Wanderley Luxemburgo first brought him into the Under-17 world championship-winning side two years ago after the youngster impressed with a series of sterling performances in the youth and reserve sides at Gremio of Porto Alegre.
Was part of the Brazilian Under-20 side that was eliminated by Uruguay in the 1999 world championships in Nigeria. Says Ronaldinho: "All I want is to make a career for myself in football and make a name for myself." Elder brother now plays in Japan. Signed his first professional contract following Brazilīs 1997 sub-17 title won in Egypt. Was included in the 1999 Copa America squad only after Edilson was axed for indiscipline.
